This week we will explore search engines.  Lets start by  considering what you look for in a search engine.  What makes one better than another?  Here are some interesting and varied search engines.  After we try them out in the lab, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Below find some sample searches we can use to compare the different searches:

Google

Dogpile

Ask.com

SearchMe

Mnomomap

Cuil

Suppose you are looking for information on the following topics. First, think about how you would formulate your search.  Try several possibilities. Compare the results from these different searches across the six sites. Which are the most useful? Imagine you are looking for:

1) links to the top three most popular blogs in your country

2) information on how to build a computer from scratch

3) a downloadable pdf of the preparation book for the Mass driver's exam

4) information on mark to market accounting

5) information on why Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving

6) a pizzaria near CELOP

7) graduate business programs in the Boston area

8) video of Sarah Palin in a bathing suit

9) a page about lemons (fruit) and a nice picture of a lemon

10) a page about another kind of lemon (law)

One interesting measure being blamed for this crisis is called mark-to-market accounting, a change in accounting practice that went into effect last year. Here is how Wikipedia defines it, here is an article from the Wall St. Journal, and a rant from a blog.
